Abraham Lincoln

Student Success Statement

“I am not bound to win; I am bound to be true. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.”

Abraham Lincoln

LOL. I kind of understand the quote, and kind of don’t. I get how winning isn’t everything, it’s about being the real you? I’m not sure. Then if you are going to stand by someone’s side and support their decisions then you are all in, not just “part with him when wrong.” Like no, it does not work that way with people. You don’t just say ‘yea I’m with you,’ and then leave them hanging.

April Fool's Day

April Fool’s Day

Traditionally an occasion for playing tricks on April 1st.  This custom has been observed for hundreds of years, but its origin is unknown. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar. Romans and Hindus, celebrated New Year's Day on or around April 1. Later it was changed to January 1st; people began to make fun of the tradition, sending them on "foolish errands" trying to trick them into believing different things.

Tyler Haws

Student Success Statement

“I trust that my hard work will pay off”

Tyler Haws

Sure sometimes hard work pays off, but not always. It isn’t like if you put it out in the universe it comes back to you. It doesn’t. It’s all about doing it yourself and ‘hoping’ that it turns out the way you wanted, because sometimes karma is mean.

Brigham Young

Student Success Statement

“True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what’s right”

Brigham Young

I mean I guess if it’s when you’re young. As an adult, you cannot apply this statement to everybody. People are going to do what they want to do, there is no way around being the perfect person. Nobody is perfect.

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day

The feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, saint of Ireland. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services. According to legend, Patrick died on March 17; the celebration of his death is known to take place in many countries such as, Canada, United States, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. In the Declaration it says he spent many years converting “thousands” to Christianity. St Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. The Friendly Brothers of St Patrick, an Irish fraternity founded in about 1750, adopted green as its color. Green would become associated with Irish nationalism, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the color green and its association with St Patrick's Day grew.

Keith and Football

Keith the Football Player

At Fly Eagle middle school there was a boy named Keith who was mentally disabled. The boy was on the football team but never played. The football team decided to let Keith score during one of their games, but only Keith. The plan was to get as close to the 10 yard line as possible, even if it meant to stop right before scoring. No one knew what the team had planned, not the coaches, students, or Keith’s parents.

“They’re only truly great who are truly good.”

George Chapman

I guess I can agree with the statement; more or less. Some people can be a great type of friend to you but have a bad heart towards others. I mean it could depend on the situation and the person. I am very open minded when it comes to people and their feelings and the way they think.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities

When trying to apply for a volunteer opportunity, there are thousands of different websites that can lead you to many different job careers. I went into www.wellchild.org  the St. John’s South Los Angeles Hospital website, and on the right hand side of the web page there was a link that opened a new sign up page. Simple type in your basic information and they would contact you when needed. The volunteer program can provide someone the opportunity to become an administration, accounting, personnel, patient reception, medical records, medical and dental clinicians.

George Mitchell

Student Success Statement

“Many think that the short term gain will be worth the long term pain, but it isn’t. In addition, using steroids is cheating, and there is nothing worse in sports than a cheater. Don’t do it.”

George Mitchell

Sometimes the short term gain is really worth the long term pain. Yes, maybe it isn’t when applying it to sports and the steroids used to win medals, but if it could save a loved one’s life, then who cares. It is better to suffer with the thought of cheating, and forget within a few years, or hurt for the rest of your life because someone you loved died by your decisions.

Student Success Statement

“I won’t cheat.”

Dale Murphy

Lots of people cheat in this world, I feel like it’s no big deal. Everyone cheats at least once in their entire lifetime. Yes its bad to cheat and all, but you can’t stop/catch everyone. It’s another thing to just deal in life.

Oncologist

Oncologist

Duties and Responsibilities: A doctor who specializes in treating people with cancer. The three types of oncologists are medical, surgical, and radiation. Often work in groups.

Salary: $217,856

Education: Bachelor's degree

I wouldn’t become an oncologist because I would not want dying patients on my mind. Even though doctors do the best they can to prevent someone from dying, people always seem to put the blame on them, and I wouldn’t want that pressure.

Student Success Statement

“Character matters most”

Dale Murphy

Character does matter in the sense where you cannot pretend to be someone you are not; especially when you are trying to become known either as an athlete, actor, or simple as a person. People don’t accept ‘fakers’ only real people who know what they want in life.

I didn’t really understand what I was researching; I couldn’t even find the salary or education requirements. So I would not want to do something that I don’t know how it works or does.

Benjamin Franklin

Student Success Statement

“Great beauty, great strength, and great riches are really and truly of no great use; a right heart exceeds all.”

Benjamin Franklin

Having a ‘right’ heart doesn’t get you the things you need and want. Sadly in this world, money is everything, and if you could get it using your beauty, you bet I will, especially with strength, it is the only way. Being healthy and strong. Yes having a ‘right’ heart is a god thing, but if its all you have, it will get you nothing.

Health Educator

Health Educator

Duties and Responsibilities: Teach people about behaviors that promote wellness. They develop and implement strategies to improve the health of individuals and communities. Have taken and passed a test in order to work at schools, teaching the public how to live healthy lifestyles.

Salary: $48,790

Education: bachelor's degree

I do want to become a teacher in the future but not a ‘health educator.’ It seems to easy of a class. I would like to teach a more challenging subject, so that students could see the time and effort a teacher puts in, into teaching the young.

Alternative Rock

Alternative Rock

I was listening to K-Rock one morning while getting ready for school as I always do. At one point throughout the music, Kevin and Bean bring on a live  listener to request a song. Well, the funniest thing happened, the listener was a 15-year-old requesting a Justin Bieber song because they did not play any. LMAO. She had me dying of laughter. Like, no duh, they did not play Justin Bieber, it’s a rock station. Then it got me thinking; did she really not know what type of station it was? Did anybody know what kind of music they played?

It later donned on me that the teenage generation of today do not listen to Alternative rock from the 90’s. I know a few still do, including myself. It is just sad to know that alternative rock has died out throughout the years. It has constantly been mistaken for Pop, and Indie rock. Personally i feel like punk rock did not get big until the 2000’s era transitioning into Pop rock. Afterward came Indie rock; a mix of folk instruments with an upbeat electric melody.

Is the era of alternative rock really over? Was it because our infamous band Nirvana ended before they had a chance to really start? My first real favorite song was ‘creep’ by Radiohead, and I thank them for opening my eyes to the best music that has lots of meaning in this world. Slowly, I have been leaning towards Indie rock due to the famous band Imagine Dragons who I have seen in concert. Amazing music, but the grunge era will not let me slip away. Grunge is so my thing, and I would not change it for the world, but how long will I be able to pull it off? The Grunge era is way over and they are only a few real alternative rock veterans who will forever have the passion for the music, just like me. Don’t give up my fellow listeners, our time will come again to thrive as a rock unit.
